What Divides Us – BookTalk at BSC 2011

“It is not our differences that divide us.  It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”   — Audre Lorde, American teacher, poet, and activist, 1934-1992

For BookTalk at BSC 2011, our reading and discussion will focus on the things that divide us — race, religion, caste, class, gender, and more.  With three terrific books and three dynamic discussion leaders, I know we are going to have a memorable discussion series.

Please join us from 1 to 3 p.m. on these Sunday afternoons in the BSC Library as we discuss:

Mudbound  by Hillary Jordan – Sunday, January 9, 2011 – Discussion leader: Dr. Janelle Masters  [Note: We plan to finish our discussion a little early to allow those who also want to attend the Conversations at BSC event at 3 p.m. ample time to get there.]

The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar – Sunday, February 6, 2011 – Discussion leader: Dr. AnnMarie Kajencki

The Book of Dead Birds by Gayle Brandeis – Sunday, March 6, 2011 – Discussion leader: Suzanne Kramer-Brenna

The books can be borrowed from local libraries or purchased from booksellers.  Refreshments will be served.

BookTalk discussions are free and open to all.  For more information, call 224-5450.

Funded by the BSC Library and a grant from the BSC Foundation
