Plagiarism – What’s the Big Deal?

Why all the fuss about plagiarism?  The synonyms of the word — appropriation, infringement, piracy, counterfeiting, theft, borrowing, cribbing, passing off — provide some clues.  It is definitely NOT the way to do things.  Students who engage in plagiarism can also face some serious consequences outlined in BSC’s Academic Honor Code.

What is it? Plagiarism (noun) is defined by Dictionary.com¹ as:

1. an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.

2. a piece of writing or other work reflecting such unauthorized use or imitation.

This diagram from EasyBib will help you make sense of it all.
