About the Vase Series

“Dyan Rey’s Vase Series was inspired by the historical and contemporary art she saw in China during a visit she made with her husband Eliot Glassheim in 2009. The images were included in Foreign Exchange: American Encounters with China, a book of poetry written by Glassheim, and  published by the North Dakota Museum of Art.

The Vase Series are collages that echo the shapes of bronzes, ceramic vessels, and plant forms. They were cut from abstract ink paintings made years earlier. The calligraphic brushwork of the ink paintings was influenced by Abstract Expressionism, a style that itself was originally influenced by Chinese calligraphy.”
