Dog Days of Summer

We’re in the dog days* of summer … a time when we don’t want to do much except enjoy the air conditioning. Here are some things to do while you’re holed up inside.

  • Reread your favorite book.
  • Draw your own comic. Or something.
  • Go see a movie, maybe based on a book.
  • Listen to an audiobook.
  • Listen to a podcast.
  • Start writing your memoirs.
  • Dress up as your favorite literary character.
  • Read cookbooks and try new recipes.
  • Make lists of the books you want to read.

*The dog days are periods of hot, humid weather in July, August, and early September. The name originated with the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, who believed that Sirius, the dog star, which rises simultaneously with the Sun at this time of year, caused the hot weather by adding its heat to that of the Sun. Since people tend to be become listless this time of year, Sirius was thought to have a detrimental effect on human activities. Another reason for the name may be the belief that dogs are subject to spells of madness during this time.
