Good news! We received word from the BSC Foundation that our BookTalk at BSC 2012 grant request was funded!
We are working on the final plans, but here’s a preview to whet your appetite:
Our theme, The Only Thing that Lasts, was inspired (in part) by this line from Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind:
“Do you mean to tell me, Katie Scarlett O’Hara, that Tara, that land doesn’t mean anything to you? Why, land is the only thing in the world worth workin’ for, worth fightin’ for, worth dyin’ for, because it’s the only thing that lasts.” — Gerald O’Hara
The Books
BookTalk discussions will be held in the BSC Library from 1-3 p.m. Discussions are free and open to all.
Stay tuned for more details … In the meantime, start reading.
Now I know what all the fuss is about. I finally got around to reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Swedish author Stieg Larsson (1954-2004). What a ride! It’s a terrific book.
Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo, is unlike any other character I’ve encountered in literature. She’s fascinating — wicked smart with a strong sense of justice. A little scary, too.
Like The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, one of my all time favorite books, there are a couple of mysteries in this book. One involves murder and the other is about greed and corruption, money and power. Both story lines are compelling and will keep you guessing until the end.
Speaking of the end, the best thing is that the story doesn’t end with one book. There are two other titles in the trilogy: The Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. No surprise, but they are next on my reading list. All three are available at the BSC Library in an ebook format in our Beyond Library Walls Digital Collection. Check them out!
I’m also looking forward to seeing the movie versions. The American film, starring Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgard, Christopher Plummer, Robin Wright, Joely Richardson, Goran Visnjic, and others, will be out on December 21. Swedish movie versions of all three books, starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace, are already out. I have the DVD of the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Män som Hatar Kvinnor) waiting at home for me to watch this weekend.
Good reading! Good viewing!
